Shares in a Nutshell
When a publication is in its second edition, it generally means that the first edition proved so popular, that the publishers felt it was worth revising and re-issuing. This brief introduction to shares is just that.
As with all the …in a Nutshell books, it is simple, though not simplistic. This one looks at what is involved in getting into the markets and managing a portfolio. Chatting with and listening to people around the country, I have observed that many people with sizeable portfolios don’t have this basic understanding of share market concepts, which is to their peril.
While it doesn’t and couldn’t cover every aspect in detail in a short 176 pages, the book does cover all the general areas in reasonable detail. You can use it in two ways: as an introduction, or a periodic review; or as part one of a much more in-depth course where you draw on other local books by people like Roth, Bedford, Guppy and Lally.
With more than 20 years of market experience, the author lays a good foundation of understanding though I disagree with some of his definitions. This is where the value of being well read comes in. Often various authors will explain concepts in ways that seem at odds with each other. A paragraph generally cannot explain a subject as clearly and in as much detail as a book dedicated to the subject.
This popular book will remain popular because, as the name says, it has all the information you need in a nutshell. For the evolving serious investor this book represents a small but important early step in developing understanding.
